HELENA–Seniors on the Helena Lady Huskies softball team were honored in a pregame ceremony before their final regular season home game on April 25, and it was only fitting that senior Reagan Curtis came up with a clutch walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel Helena past Hueytown 3-2.
Helena seniors Jordan Ingram, Avery Mann and Curtis were recognized for their effort and dedication to the Helena softball program and took photos with family members in their final regular season home game as Lady Huskies.
Through the first five innings of the game, strong pitching and defense was seen on both sides and neither team could break through and score a run.
The games first runs came in the top of the sixth inning as Hueytown hit two sacrifice fly balls to pull ahead for a 2-0 lead.
Helena responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Laney Bruner singled to score Katie Lively to shrink Hueytown’s lead to 2-1.
Down 2-1 and facing their last three outs, Helena needed to rally to give their seniors a nice sendoff, and they did just that.
After Mekhi Mayfield was hit by a pitch, Ingram singled to left field to advance Mayfield to second.
With runners on first and second with one out, Curtis roped a double to left field to score both Mayfield and Ingram to give the Lady Huskies an exciting 3-2 walk-off win.
Another big part of Helena’s success came from freshman pitcher Avery Barnett who tossed a complete game that included 14 strikeouts and no walks.
Helena will host the Class 5A Area 7 tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face Central Tuscaloosa on Tuesday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.
