MOUNTAIN BROOK – After Briarwood’s opening game of the Mountain Brook spring break tournament was cancelled on March 31, the Lions played three games over the next two days, losing to Oneonta by a run before beating Clay-Chalkville and Pleasant Grove to move to 18-7 on the season.

 

Game 1. Oneonta 8 – Briarwood 7

In a back-and-forth offensive battle to start the spring break tournament, Briarwood scored two runs in the second, three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth and sixth innings respectively to take a 7-5 lead into the seventh inning against Oneonta. The Redskins however plated three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead, and held Briarwood scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback.

The Lions used Sam Strickland, Hudson Hartsfield, Michael Hiers and Trey Mitchell from the mound on the day while Carson Eddy, Jake Morris, Will Baumbach and Carter Bankston each had two hits to lead Briarwood from the plate. Bankston also had 3 RBIs in the game.

 

Game 2. Briarwood 2 – Clay-Chalkville 0

Logan Whittlesey took the mound for Briarwood in the first Saturday game and never relinquished his post, giving up just two hits and no runs while striking out seven in a gem of an outing. The Lions needed Whittlesey to be in control, as Clay-Chalkville’s Kameron Gilham and Steven Edwards held the Briarwood offense to just two runs over the course of seven innings, which was still enough to get the win.

Hartsfield scored in the top of the fourth when Eddy hit a sac fly, and Will Shepherd scored in the top of the sixth when Morris singled to center to give Briarwood its two runs.

Whittlesey also had two hits on two at-bats from the plate to complete his all-around game, while Kolby Kwarcinski went 2-for-4 from the plate as well as Briarwood won 2-0.

 

Game 3. Briarwood 19 – Pleasant Grove 7

Briarwood scored one run in the first, seven runs in the second and a whopping 11 runs in the third inning as the Lions easily outstripped Pleasant Grove by a 19-7 final. Bankston went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with a pair of RBIs while Cole Steadman had four RBIs on one hit.

Morris, Kwarcinski, Bradford Pattillo and Hiers all saw time on the mound in the win as Briarwood moved to 18-7.
