PELHAM— As a way to raise awareness for breast cancer in Pelham, the Riverchase Middle School tennis teams hosted a breast cancer tennis match March 8 at the Pelham Racquet Club against the Westminster School at Oak Mountain.

Clad in pink socks, hats, stripes and more, both the Riverchase girls and boys won the match. The girls won 5-4, and the boys also won 5-4.

“I thought the boys and girls played extremely well,” said head coach Tiffany Wright. ”Throughout the whole match they had great attitudes and fought hard. I have 14 athletes on the team, and 10 of those 14 have never played tennis before. They work extremely hard and enjoy playing. They are learning the fundamentals of tennis and are competing really well to be inexperienced. I am very proud of both the girls and boys team and excited to see how our season plays out. ”

For the boys, Josh Rehovsky, an eighth-grader won his singles match with a score of 6-2 and David Aldrich, who is also in eighth grade, won his singles match 6-4. Together Rehovsky and Aldrich dominated doubles with a score of 6-1.

Eighth-grader Kennedy Chamber and seventh-grader Ariana Smith both won their individual matches 6-3.

Ashley Anderson and Kennedy Chambers played in a doubles match together and ended up losing in a tiebreaker against Westminster, but Wright said the heart they put into the match was incredible. They fought the entire match and did not give up.

“They showed great leadership and sportsmanship,” Wright said. “I am very proud of those two girls. They represented Riverchase Middle School with honors.”
