VINCENT – After losing five out of its last six, the Vincent baseball Yellow Jackets picked up a much-needed win on March 8, beating BB Comer 10-0 as Ethan Davis threw a no-hitter. As of March 10, the Yellow Jackets were 5-9, and of their nine losses, seven of them were by margins of two runs or less. Vincent has seen its fair share of nail-biters in the early going, and picking up an easy win was big for the young team.
From the jump, Davis commanded the game from the mound. Through two innings of work, Davis struck out three batters swinging, and only needed seven total pitches to get out of the fourth inning en route to his no-hitter.
“(He) pitched well,” Vincent head coach Ryan Halla said. “A little wild early, but then (he) settled down and threw strikes.”
Despite Davis’ work on the mound, Vincent clung to just a 1-0 lead entering the third inning before the Yellow Jackets blew the doors off. Jordan Smith, Cole Fincher and Ryan Childers all registered hits in the bottom of the third, while Matthew Swift had two hits in the inning as Vincent hung eight runs on BB Comer to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The first six batters of the inning reach base safely either via hit or walk en route to the scoring bonanza.
Childers doubled off the first pitch of the fourth inning, and Fincher hit a single on the very next pitch to bring Childers home and give Vincent the 10-0 lead. Davis made short work of the three Tiger batters in the top of the fifth to secure the win for Vincent.
Davis threw 70 pitches over five innings, gave up no hits and no runs and struck out five while walking three. He threw strikes on 60 percent of his pitches as well.
Fincher led the way from the plate for Vincent, going 3-for-3 on the day with two RBIs, while Childers and Swift each had two hits, respectively.
