CHELSEA – A Chelsea Middle School student has been arrested and charged with making terrorist threats toward other students.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 14-year-old CHMS eighth-grade student at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at the student’s home in Chelsea after the student allegedly threatened other students at school, according to an SCSO press release.

CHMS reported the threats to the SCSO at the end of the school day Feb. 25, and deputies and investigators immediately responded and conducted interviews that day and the next day to either verify or dismiss the threats, the release read.

The student, who did not attend school Feb. 26 or Feb. 29, is being held at the Shelby County Juvenile Facility.

Word of the alleged threats began circulating on Facebook late last week as the investigation started.

“I am very proud of the team work between school officials and Shelby County deputies,” Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego wrote. “In all, close to 30 students were interviewed to make sure enough probable cause existed to arrest the accused. I want to thank the County Commission and Board of Education who continue to support the Safe Schools Initiative program.”
