HARPERSVILLE—After two recent burglaries in Harpersville, Police Chief Jimmy Macon urges residents to stay aware of their surroundings, be cautions and call the police if something seems out of place.

In mid-February, police were called to a residence in the 200 block of Shelby County 83 when the two female residents awoke to find an intruder in their home. The man, described as a 5-foot-7-inch white male, fled the scene when the women threatened to call the police.

The same week, police also responded to a burglary in the Farmingdale subdivision.

Nothing was reported missing from either burglary and no injuries were incurred, but the two burglaries were unusual in the normally quiet town, Macon said.

“It caught me off guard because Harpersville does not have a lot of burglaries at all,” Macon said.

Macon encouraged residents to lock their doors and take steps to stay safe.

“Don’t answer the door unless you know who it is,” Macon said. “If they don’t answer to you…and you expect someone is trying to do something, by all means give us a call.”

Macon also urged residents to stay aware of their surroundings and take down the tag number of suspicious vehicles. If something seems out of place, Macon asked residents to call the police to check out the situation.

Warning signs to look out for are unusual people in a neighborhood or “someone pacing back and forth through your neighborhood,” Macon said.

“When you see someone who doesn’t fit in and you’ve never seen them before…chances are, they’re casing your location,” Macon said.

Macon encouraged Harpersville residents to call the police in any case of suspicious activity.
