PELHAM— As a way to celebrate its 50th year in business, the staff at Vulcan Termite and Pest Control in Pelham presented Susan G Komen of North Central Alabama with a giant, pink check worth $2,800 on Jan. 29.
“We figured that there are so many people in our lives, people that we know and families that we know that have dealt with breast cancer,” said general manager Fred Smith. “We just felt it was a good opportunity to help that and to give back to the community.”
Smith said the staff started brainstorming charities and community organizations to get involved with, and they decided that the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was a great one.
The money donated represents a portion of all the jobs Vulcan Termite worked for the year. He said they like the amount they were able to donate, but he’s not satisfied with the number.
“We are just excited to be able to present this check,” Smith said.
They plan on looking into other charities and ways to give back in the future, and Smith said they have come up with some good ideas.
Vulcan Termite and Pest Control, Inc., was established in 1965 and is one of the largest family owned and operated termite and pest control companies in Alabama. Its technicians provide pest control services for both residential and commercial customers.
“We’ve got a lot of folks that have been with us a long time, that’s what I like about my staff is we’ve got people who’ve been here for 15 to 20 years,” Smith said. “Some of them have been here longer than that.”
A representative from Susan G Komen, Ginger Pegues, visited Vulcan Jan. 29 to pick up the check. Smith said she was excited after hearing that Vulcan was able to donate $2,800.
“We are just thrilled and so grateful,” Pegues said. “It’s such a generous way to celebrate your 50th anniversary.”
