Schools announce early closings Jan. 22 for winter weather

The University of Montevallo, Indian Springs School and Hoover City Schools will close early on Friday, Jan. 22 because of “the threat of winter weather and deteriorating driving conditions later this afternoon.” Alabaster schools have canceled all afterschool activities, and the extended-day program will dismiss at 4 p.m.

The UM early closing includes all extracurricular activities.

Schedule changes will be sent via UM Alert, the Facebook post read.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham issued a hazardous weather outlook at 4:58 a.m. on Jan. 22 that expires at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 for multiple Alabama counties, including Shelby County.

Indian Springs School also has announced it will close at 12:30 p.m. School buses will run at that time.

Hoover City Schools will dismiss 30 minutes early due to the weather. Elementary schools will dismiss at 2:15 p.m., middle schools will dismiss at 2:45 p.m. and the two high schools will dismiss at 3 p.m. Buses will run regular routes. Additionally, extended day programs, after school and evening activities are all cancelled.

Snow accumulations up to 2 inches are possible for Shelby County, according to the NWS.

“A storm system will move across Central Alabama today and bring with it a chance of snow,” according to the NWS Birmingham site. “Rain will become mixed with snow and then change over to all snow Friday afternoon into Friday night. At this time, there is a chance of snow accumulations across the northern part of the area, with generally one-quarter inch up to 2 inches possible.”

Strong, gusty winds of 15-25 miles per hour, and wind gusts of about 30 miles per hour, could also arrive.
