HOOVER – Jamal Johnson and Austin Wiley combined for 13 first-quarter points against Hewitt-Trussville at home on Jan. 15 as Spain Park opened up a 22-9 lead after the first quarter en route to an easy 77-39 win to move the 7A No. 1 Jaguars to 15-6 (4-0) on the season.
In the first three quarters of the game, Spain Park did not score less than 22 points in any quarter. The Jaguars offense was clicking all night behind the efforts of Johnson, Wiley and Justin Brown, who had 10 points in the second quarter to lead Spain Park into the half with a 46-22 lead. Hewitt-Trussville could not muster more than 13 in any one quarter, and was held under 10 points on two separate occasions in the game, including just a four-point fourth quarter.
After opening up a 24-point lead at halftime, Johnson and Jameson Floyd kept the pressure on in the third as the two guards combined for 11 points in the third period to lead the Jaguars’ 23-point third quarter effort. The Huskies only managed 13 points in the quarter, and the fourth period was just a formality as the Jaguars held a 69-35 lead after three before eventually winning by 38 points.
Spain Park has now won its last six games by an average of 23 points and has rounded into the No. 1 form most expected from them at the start of the season.
Wiley finished with 18 points while Johnson finished with 17 and Brown had 16 to lead the way for the top-ranked Jaguars.
