Montevallo needs comeback to beat Holy Family

After falling behind 17-7 after the first quarter of play on Friday, Jan. 8, the Montevallo Bulldogs outscored Holy Family 48-32 over the final three periods to move to 16-5 (4-0). Tavarus Hall and Tae’ Smith once again led Montevallo as Hall finished with 19 points and six rebounds while Smith had 17 points and eight boards.

 

Vincent handles Shelby County on the road

EJ Datcher had one of his best statistical games of the season on the road against in-county opponent Shelby County on Jan. 8. Datcher finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead Vincent to a 63-51 win. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter and did not relinquish that lead the rest of the game. Quinterious Montgomery finished with 21 to lead the Wildcats, which fell to 6-9.

 

Reese has career night for Pelham

Alex Reese finished with 47 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots as Pelham got its second area win 75-60. Reese accounted for 63 percent of the team’s scoring on the night as Pelham moved to 11-7 overall and 2-0 in area play.

 

Briarwood boys throttled by Homewood

The Lions dropped their second consecutive area game on Jan. 8 when they traveled to take on the Homewood Patriots and fell by a final score of 55-23. Trey Jemison led Homewood in the effort as Briarwood could not contain the big sophomore down low nor keep Homewood’s sharpshooters from hitting from deep, as the Patriots hit eight three-pointers in the game.

 

Chelsea’s struggles continue

After going 1-10 from a stretch lasting from Nov. 24-Dec. 29, the Chelsea Hornets have been trying to dig out of that hole ever since. The Hornets did turn in two straight wins against Chickasaw and Pell City, but fell to Oxford on Jan. 8 by a final of 55-47 to move to 5-14 (1-1). Of Chelsea’s last 11 losses, eight have come by 10 points or less. The next game the Hornets will play is against Oxford again, on the road on Jan. 15.

 

Pelham girls doubled up by John Carroll Catholic

John Carroll Catholic poured in 56 first half points as the Lady Cavaliers opened up a 25-point halftime lead over Pelham en route to a 80-41 win. Pelham fell to 5-14 with the loss and 0-2 in area play.

 

Jan. 9

Briarwood girls handle Leeds

Briarwood moved to 13-5 on the season with a Saturday, Jan. 9 win against Leeds by a final of 45-20. The game came less than 24 hours after the Lady Lions dropped their first area game of the season to Homewood. In the game against Leeds, Shelly Proctor finished with 15 points and five rebounds while Ellie Tarence had 11 points to lead Briarwood.
