PELHAM— Three Michigan residents were arrested Dec. 31, 2015, after allegedly breaking and entering a vehicle in the Chandalar area, according to Pelham Police Lt. Pat Cheatwood.
Twenty-year-olds Cody Quay and Elizabeth Szumski of Grand Rapids, Mich., and David Rodriguez of Cedar, Mich., were each charged with unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle, second-degree theft of property, second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Cheatwood said that Rodriguez was also charged with a felony count of obstructing justice after he allegedly gave officers a false identity and date of birth. The suspect likely has an active warrant on his name, according to Cheatwood, which is why the obstruction of justice charge was a felony and not a misdemeanor.
The trio was stopped along Old Montgomery Highway by the Pelham Police Department, according to Cheatwood. They were all apprehended at the same time in connection to the break-in near Chandalar.
Quay, Szumski and Rodriguez were transported to the Shelby County Jail. Quay and Szumski are being held on bonds totaling $12,000, and Rodriguez’s bonds total $17,000.
Unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle, second-degree theft of property and obstructing justice are Class C felonies. Second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia are both Class A misdemeanors.
According to Alabama state law, the suspects could face up to 10 years in prison for each Class C felony and up to one year in prison for each Class A misdemeanor.
