ALABASTER – A 49-year-old Warrior man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after police said he allegedly committed home repair fraud and stole from an elderly Alabaster couple.

The Alabaster Police Department arrested Ferrell Wayne Spradlin, who lists an address on Sunview Road in Warrior, on Dec. 5 and charged him with one felony count of financial exploitation of an elderly person and one misdemeanor count of home repair fraud.

The charges came after police received a report from an elderly Alabaster victim claiming Spradlin offered to complete home repairs on her house, according to Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney.

“He had an agreement to do some work around the house, and the victim had to pay some up front,” Rigney said. “But the work was never completed.”

Spradlin then allegedly gave the victim “a sob story” and requested more money from her, which the suspect received, Rigney said.

According to Spradlin’s arrest warrants, he allegedly collected $1,638.71 from the victim between January and March of this year, and failed to perform the repairs he was paid to complete.

“This is not the first case like this against this suspect,” Rigney said.

According to court records, Spradlin pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree theft by deception in 2007, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was released four years later after being transferred to a work release program.

As of Dec. 15, Spradlin remained in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $16,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 7, 2016, for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m.
