ALEXANDER CITY – Both the boys and girls basketball teams from Briarwood Christian School made the trek down to Benjamin Russell High School on Dec. 8 for some inter-area 6A basketball. The Lady Lions came into the game sporting a 7-1 overall record, with their only blemish coming in the Bryant Bank Thanksgiving Tournament while the boys came in with a 5-3 record. Both pulled out easy wins on the road to advance to 8-1 and 6-3, respectively.
The girls never had much trouble as they picked up a 56-30 victory. Senior Molly McKenzie led nine Briarwood scorers with 13 points, coming primarily off of three three-pointers. Sophomores Morgan Hutchinson and Sophie Muir-Taylor added 10 points a pop as well to help lead Briarwood.
The boys also did not struggle much as they picked up a 53-37 win. The Lions held a 36-22 advantage at the half thanks to 11 first-half points from Thomas Collier and five from Carson Donnelley.
Briarwood held Benjamin Russell to just three points in the third quarter to effectively put the game out of reach as the Lions advanced to 6-3 with the 53-37 win.
Jeffrey Teavis was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe in the second half, and led Briarwood on the night with 17 points while Collier finished with 12 to lead Briarwood.
