LEEDS – Montevallo’s season came to a close Friday with a 62-7 loss at third-ranked Leeds High School.

The Bulldogs end the season 9-3, tied for the second-most wins in program history.

“It was a great season. We’re pleased with the way we played up to this point. I tip our hats to our guys. We gave ourselves a chance in the playoffs,” said MHS Head Coach Andrew Zow, who was making his first playoff appearance as head coach.

“I’m very pleased with how our team responded during the summer. I’m pleased we were able to get the wins early and how our community responded and got behind our boys. The team became part of the community and really got behind the team each week. I hope that tradition continues.”

The defending Class 4A state champs shut out the Bulldogs through three quarters of play en route to their ninth straight win to advance to the third round of the playoffs for the 10th straight year.

Montevallo scored its lone touchdown with 5:13 to play in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard pass from Zac Oden to Daqwan Bryant. Diego Martinez added the extra point. Prior to the touchdown, Leeds had outscored its opponents 302-0 during the previous 20.5 quarters of play.

Leeds took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and led 42-0 at halftime. The Green Wave added two touchdowns in the third quarter and one more in the fourth.

“They did whatever they wanted to. They ran the ball well. We dropped a few balls early, and the momentum was in their hands. They were a much better team than us tonight,” Zow said. “Hopefully we learned something. We know what playoff football is about now. Our guys were green to it. We’ll going to go back to the drawing board and hopefully we can respond in the offseason and grow from it to continue to build the program

Oden finished the night 10-of-32 yards passing for 140 yards, one touchdown and an interception thrown. Ahmad Edwards was his leading target with 85 yards on four catches, while Bryant finished with 18 yards on two receptions. Undraez Lilly and TreShawn Brown led the Montevallo defense with 16 and 15 tackles, respectively.

Leeds (10-2) will travel to Mobile next week to meet top-ranked UMS-Wright (12-0) in a rematch of the 2014 Class 4A semifinals. The Green Wave won that meeting 42-14.
