ASHVILLE – A Columbiana man being held in the St. Clair County Jail on a capital murder charge related to the death of Shelby County teen Haleigh Green was arrested Oct. 9 for allegedly destroying state property.

Demarcus Means, 19, was charged with one count of destruction of state property by an inmate after he “did on or about October 2, 2015, a convict or prisoner, willfully or maliciously injure or destroy any building or property belonging to the state or instrumentality of a value in excess of $25,” according to court documents.

His bond is set at $2,500, and no injuries were reported.

Destruction of state property by an inmate is a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Means was indicted earlier this year on a capital murder charge for allegedly killing Green, 18, of Shelby.

Means is being held on no bond for the capital murder charge.

Means filed an application for youthful offender status in Shelby County Circuit Court on Sept. 25, along with motions for change of venue and appointing additional counsel.

A youthful offender hearing for Means is set for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Shelby County Courthouse in Columbiana.

If arraigned as a youthful offender, Means would waive his right to a trial by jury, and a judge would decide his guilt or innocence in the case, according to court documents. Suspects found guilty in youthful offender cases fare a less-severe range of punishments.
