The woes for the Kingwood Christian Lions continued Friday night, this time at the hands of the Glenwood Gators. The Gators struck pay dirt first on a touchdown run with 2:29 left in the opening quarter after recovering a fumbled snap by Kingwood. Glenwood missed the extra point.
Entering the second quarter, Kingwood quarterback Chase Inabiett fumbled a second time and Glenwood recovered again, setting up a touchdown by quarterback Carrington Huddleston on a draw play with eight minutes left in the half. The two-point conversion was true and the Gators led 14-0 at intermission.
After some heavy rain at halftime, both teams hit the soggy field. Kingwood scored their lone touchdown of the evening on a defensive touchdown when Kerry Thompson put six on the board after a scoop and score with 5:20 left in the third quarter. The two-point try failed and the score stood at 14-6.
However, the momentum shift was short lived, as the Gators responded with a touchdown that took less than a minute and a half. Glenwood added one more score late in the fourth to put the icing on the cake as it cruised 26-6.
Coach Sheldon Ward said after the game that his team cannot be complacent. “We just have to let them understand that nobody plays that much better than us,” Ward said. “They aren’t 26-6 better than us. We just have to find some fight.”
Kingwood will travel to Jackson Academy next week.
