HOOVER—The Hoover City Council authorized the city’s fire department to host a Firefighter Recruit School during a Sept. 8 council meeting.

The recruit school will be hosted and led by the Hoover Fire Department, but will be open to firefighters from departments across the state. According to Hoover Fire Chief John Wingate, 20 firefighters from Hoover, Vestavia, Homewood, Orange Beach and Northport fire departments are expected to participate.

While only one Hoover firefighter will be among the representatives enrolled in the recruit school, Wingate said leading the recruit school is one of the largest benefits for the Hoover Fire Department.

“Our people are instructing the new recruits,” Wingate said. “That keeps our officers sharp, that’s the real benefit.”

In other business pertaining to Shelby County, the Hoover City Council:

-Proclaimed September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and encouraged the community to support the Hope for Autumn Foundation.

-Proclaimed Sept. 17-23 Constitution Week.

-Annexed 2905 Glenstone Circle, owned by Ralph Moore of the Patrick Oliver Group, into the city of Hoover.
