NORTH SHELBY – Fall is here and football is king, there’s no question about that. However, another popular sporting avenue that also sees high numbers in the pleasant fall season is golf. The oppressive Alabama summer sun is enough to drive even the most dedicated golf fans off the course on some days in July and August, but as September rolls around and the leaves begin to change, the courses fill up on just about every day.

Inverness Country Club is continuing its after school junior golf program the week of Sept. 22 to help bring aspiring golfers’ games along. The program is from Sept. 22-24 and is $70 per person, but $60 per PGA Junior League member.

“This is a little more advanced than the summer camps,” Marshal Robinson, assistant golf pro at Inverness Country Club said in a Sept. 3 phone interview. “It’s for the kids who have been to a few camps, have played a little bit, kids who are looking to go past the beginner level.”

This fall camp started a year ago, and Inverness has also been running summer golf camps for quite a while, hosting for this summer. Last year, the fall camps brought about a dozen kids, by Robinson’s estimation, but thinks this year could bring more.

“We had a good turnout last year,” Robinson said. “There were probably 12 kids per session in the fall. This year we did a few more things and had a lot more junior involvement as a whole, so we anticipate a little more than that this year.”

The fall camp will go past the basics of grip and setup and get more into the mechanics of the swing Robinson went on to say. The players will go on the course to work on course management and situational shots as well as take part in several competitions amongst participants. The camp is open to anyone from ages eight to 18.
