PELHAM – Portions of several roads in Pelham soon will get fresh coats of asphalt after the City Council approved a more than half-million-dollar repaving project during its June 1 meeting.

The council voted unanimously during the meeting to accept a $578,026.35 bid from the Pelham-based Wiregrass Construction company to repave nine worn roads throughout the city. The council also accepted a bid not to exceed $16,640 from the Walter Wickstrom Jr. engineering form to provide on-site quality control inspections of the repaving project.

City Council President Rick Hayes said the project is the first round of road repaving projects planned in the city this year.

“We are going to send out another (request for bid proposals) later this week,” Hayes said on June 1, noting the $578,026 bid came in lower than anticipated. “We are planning to repave another neighborhood. We are trying to get that moving as quickly as possible.”

Pelham City Engineer Jessse Jowers said crews likely will begin repaving the roads shortly after Independence Day, and said the nine roads likely will be repaved by early August, weather-permitting.

The project will repave portions of the following roads:

 

-Stonehaven Drive, which is off Shelby County 52 West in the Stonehaven subdivision.

-Stone Road, which is also in the Stonehaven subdivision.

-Clark Street, which connects Shelby County 52 West with the Stonehaven subdivision.

-Judy Circle, which is in the Royal Oaks subdivision.

-Commerce Boulevard, which is off Alabama 119 near the Pelham Walmart store.

-Commerce Circle, which is off Commerce Boulevard.

-Southgate Drive between the 2 Pesos and What-A-Burger restaurants off Alabama 119.

-Windsor Lane in Pelham’s Ballantrae subdivision.

-Windsor Circle, which connects with Windsor Lane in the Ballantrae subdivision.
