BIRMINGHAM – Chelsea High School gave 252 students diplomas at a graduation ceremony at Samford University on May 19.

“Today really is a great day to be a Hornet,” valedictorian Christopher Robinson said.

Hundreds of family members and friends attended the ceremony, along with CHHS faculty members, Westover Mayor Mark McLaughlin and Chelsea Mayor Earl Niven.

“I want to challenge each one of you to hold the sanctity of life and marriage,” Niven said to the students. “Leave this country in better shape than how you’ve found it now.”

Niven presented a $20,000 check to CHHS Principal Wayne Trucks “to be used for furthering the education of our students,” he said.

“Today’s success is due to the family members and loved ones who are here and faculty … who wouldn’t let you give up,” Trucks said to the students. “Be thankful today, celebrate today, because as we all know, it’s a great day to be a Hornet.”

Others who spoke during the ceremony included: Nathan Hardenbergh, senior class president; Samantha Jo LaBeau, senior class vice-president; Sarah Quick, salutatorian; and special music by Candray Gabrielle Rutledge and the CHHS Alma Mater by Kay Dick.

“I want to thank you for being the best class to walk the halls at Chelsea High School,” Hardenbergh said. “I will miss each and every one of you.”
