Due to the onset of summer and the desire to continue to provide our children with fun, safe and meaningful activities, parents in the community often find themselves driving long distances and paying lots of money for what seems like little gain.

With that idea in mind the staff at the Columbiana Public Library has set out to find fun safe activities for the whole family this summer right here in Columbiana.

Each week this column will examine the upcoming week’s events in more detail.

As the summer gets under way, we all need to find things to keep our children engaged and learning.

For a cheap (free) way to get them out of the house for a few hours and to encourage learning at the same time, the Columbiana Public Library is offering a Lego building event on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. “Who doesn’t love Legos” asks Librarian Assistant Mary Young of the Columbiana Public Library.

Whether you are 1 or 101, Legos are a fun family friendly activity for all.

Remember the joy of seeing what you can build and the fun of creating your vision.

Kids of all ages are welcome to build with us and experience the sense of accomplishment that comes from building something with their own hands.

Build with thousands of Legos and if you wish, see your work displayed in the Harrison Regional/Columbiana Public Libraries entrance.

Additional activities the week of May 24–31 are as follows.

Miss Jennie’s Story Time on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., which includes a story and craft for children between the ages birth and first grade.

Also on Tuesday mornings, the Loose Stitches Knitting group meets at 10 a.m. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn.

Rounding out the week Thursday night features free pizza and a PG-13 rated movie (“Unbroken”).

So don’t sit home with nothing to do, come to your public library and join in on the fun this summer.
