Quilts for Kids mission is “One stitch, one quilt, one child at a time, our most worthy cause.”

The Columbiana Quilts for Kids Chapter meets every second Saturday at the Columbiana Public Library meeting room from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The group is open to anyone but bring your own machine!

“We make patchwork quilts for seriously ill and abused kids,” said Facebook/Columbiana Quilts 4 Kids.

Quilts for Kids will move its home to the new Columbiana Senior Center when opened.

Quilter Sarah Atchison is the new craft coordinator for the center. The move will be especially nice for the library room is not air conditioned in the summer.

“We will move the crafts to the new senior center,” said Atchison at the last Friends of the Library meeting. “We will have a craft room and space for machines, fabrics, and be able to leave work in progress. We hope it will be fabulous. The Quilts for Kids will still be affiliated with the library but just have a permanent location with designated storage.”

Agnes Pool and Sheila Gallups co-founded the Columbiana Quilts 4 Kids chapter on May 1, 2010.

Quilts of new material are made to specifications, 38-inch-by-45-inch for young children and 50-inch-by-60-inch for teens, and delivered all over Alabama to places as: UAB Children’s Hospital; Shelby County DHR; Hanceville Shelter in Cullman County; Peds Units, Regional Hospital, Cullman County; Peds Unit, Druid City Hospital, Tuscaloosa; Ronald McDonald Room DC Hospital; Shoal Creek Disaster Relief, Ashville, St. Clair County; King’s Ranch; Hargrove United Methodist Church, distribution center Red Cross, Tuscaloosa; Family Services, Children’s Hospital; Cordova Drop Off Center; Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Mobile; and ER Cullman Regional Medical Center.

“For the Columbiana Chapter to be truly successful, we need assistance,” said Poole. “Donations of new cotton fabric and other notions for quilting are needed. Monetary donations are needed for postage, shipping, and for the purchase of quality children’s fabrics.”
