HELENA–A beautiful Saturday afternoon was enjoyed by thousands at Helena Elementary School as a portion of the schools property was transformed into a full-on carnival atmosphere.
Current and former students, parents, administrators and more came out to HES on three separate days to enjoy a variety of rides, games, carnival food and warm weather.
The Spring Fling was held Friday, April 10, from 5:30-10 p.m. Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, April 12, from 1-5 p.m.
HES Principal Mary Cooper has taken part in the Spring Fling festivities for many years and one of her favorite parts is seeing old students return to the fling.
“It’s a very family oriented community and it’s so much fun to see the high school kids come back,” said Cooper. “They’ll talk about what their favorite games were when they were students so it’s neat.”
Saturday was one of the busier days for the Spring Fling and hundreds of kids and adults were seen exploring the grounds to see the different rides and attractions.
On Saturday, Cooper mentioned that they had already doubled their ticket sales and that the Fling was a big success.
Another fun event that parents and residents participated in was the silent auction.
Parents and businesses donated various baskets with gifts that people could bid on. Baskets ranged from Auburn and Alabama themed gift baskets, to local business baskets and more.
In years past, Cooper said the school has made close to $5,000 from the silent auction that is always a popular attraction.
“The fling just represents Helena and it’s all about families and it’s just a fun time,” said Cooper.
The HES PTO and volunteers who helped organize the Spring Fling will already begin planning for the 2016 Fling to continue to make it fun and enjoyable for all.
