The 5 Shades of Hunger 5k will be Saturday, April 18 from 8:30-9:45 a.m. starting and ending at Elvin Hill Elementary School.
The “color” run is sponsored by Shelby County High School’s FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) formerly known as the FHA, Future Homemakers of America.
Runners are encouraged to wear a white T-shirt; as you walk/run the course, expect to be splashed with color powder randomly throughout the course!
FCCLA officers went before the City of Columbiana City Council and received approval for the color run.
Registration is $25 for children ages 5-17 and $30 for adults 18 and up. Children under 5 are free.
There will be two categories: Ages 17 and under; and ages 18 and up.
Prizes will be given to the first three winners in each category.
NOTE: All children under age 12 must be attended by adult and waivers must be signed.
The purpose of the run is two-fold: To raise awareness for the No Kid Hungry campaign and to raise funds for SCHS FCCLA.
Canned goods and non-perishable items will be collected on run day and donated to the Columbiana Food Bank, a project of the Baptist Association Thrift Store.
The food bank will be located in the refurnished meat department in the back of the old Winn Dixie building.
You do not have to run to bring a can of food!
“I learned of the Columbiana Food Bank last December,” said FCCLA President Amber Kelly. “I thought this would be a great project for the FCCLA. The run will also help raise much-needed funds for travel expenses for students to go to conferences, field trips, and other student and club needs. This is the first time we have done this and we hope to be an annual event.”
