GRADY – The Cornerstone Christian School baseball Chargers traveled to South Montgomery County Academy on April 2 for a key area double-header. Going into the day Coach Tim Smith knew how important it was for his team to get a good result.
“Winning one of two against SMCA means we are area champs and we get a first round bye and home field advantage,” Smith said. “We had to play well and stay focused and the guys responded well.
In the first game, Austin Andrews threw a perfect game. Pitching only 33 pitches, Andrews kept the ball in the strike zone and kept SMCA off the bases. “I just got in a zone and felt really good all day,” said Andrews. “My curve was working great and I focused on hitting my spots.”
This was the second time this season Andrews kept a team off the bases, as he threw a no-hitter against Lyman Ward a few weeks ago. CCS won the first game 22-0 and wrapped up first place in the area.
In the second game, eighth grader Wil LaFollette threw a no-hitter to cap off a solid pitching performance for Cornerstone. LaFollette is a pitcher with an unusual talent. He is a true ambidextrous player. He pitches with both arms and switches during the inning.
“It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” Smith said. “I can’t tell a difference in velocity from either side and Wil is very accurate with each arm.”
LaFollette has fine-tuned his skill over the last several years. “I have always been fascinated with left handed pitchers and just worked hard to learn to throw both ways,” LaFollette said. “When I first starting playing at 5 years old, I was a true right hander, but by the age of ten I was throwing with both arms.”
The Chargers won the second game 19-0 to end the day perfect.
The AISA playoffs begin April 24-25.
