HELENA–The Helena City Council approved two resolutions on Monday, March 16 to deannex from two properties within the city of Pelham.
The first property was a city of Pelham detention pond and the other is a property near Pelham High School.
The property at Pelham High School is the girl’s softball field and is actually owned by the city of Pelham and the main reason Helena wants to deannex is because Helena cannot service that area with police and fire adequately.
“It’s the Pelham High School softball field and for some reason when the lines were drawn the high school actually bought that property and built a softball field within the city limits of Helena,” said Helena Mayor Mark Hall. “We don’t want to retain control of their softball field and we’d have to provide police, fire and protection and they’ve already got the guys ready to go during an event.”
The detention pond is land that is not to be developed and for liability reasons there is not really a need for the city of Helena to have control over the property.
“The other is a retention pond the city bought so by us deannexing it that gives them the authority to take care of it, cut it and make any maintenance to it,” said Hall.
Both resolutions passed unanimously.
