What a difference a year makes.

This time last year, we were stuck between snowstorms in one of the coldest winters I can remember. (I have an admittedly faulty memory.) One week I found myself snowed in the office, and the next my husband got stuck in Washington, D.C. for several extra days after flights were cancelled.

Compare that to this past weekend, which I spent in a short sleeve shirt and no jacket. Sixty-degree weather and the promise of spring lured my husband and me outdoors for the entire day.

While I am sure the temperature will drop again – Didn’t the groundhog see his shadow this year? – last weekend was a good reminder that activities, either indoors or outdoors, can make the long winter months pass more quickly.

Luckily, Shelby County has plenty of upcoming events to keep you busy until spring officially arrives.

• College Night: University of Montevallo’s famous homecoming tradition features original performances written, directed and acted by competing groups of students. Named a “Local Legacy” by the Library of Congress, College Night is sure to entertain. College Night performances will be open to the general public on Saturday, Feb. 14.
• Arts and Culture: The Shelby County Arts Council in Columbiana is hosting two fantastic events in February. Fine Folk Art II exhibit will be displayed through Feb. 20, while a jazz and blues performance will be held on Feb. 28.
• Rodeo: February brings two beloved traditions to Columbiana: Cowboy Day and the Cattleman’s Rodeo. Cowboy Day will be Feb. 21, while the rodeo, which will include calf roping, barrel racing, bull riding and more, will be Feb. 27-28.
• Fairy Tale Ball: If you’re looking for something fun for the little ones, check out the Calera Library’s seventh annual Fairy Tale Ball. Dress up as your favorite storybook character for a fun afternoon on Feb. 21.
• Photography Hike: Meet the naturalist at the Oak Mountain State Park office on Terrace Drive at 9 a.m. Feb. 28 for a seasonal photography hike.
