BIRMINGHAM – State Rep. Arnold Mooney, R – Birmingham, announced on Monday, Jan. 26, that he has been appointed to serve on the House Ways and Means General Fund Committee, which writes budgets for all non-education state agencies, the House Health Committee, and two local House committees that handle legislation directly affecting Shelby and Jefferson counties.
“As a businessman, I have spent my career dealing with budgets, setting priorities, and working to meet the bottom line, and I believe all of that experience will be helpful as we address the $250 million shortfall in the state’s General Fund budget,” Mooney wrote in a Jan. 26 news release. “I’m also proud to serve on the House Health Committee as we ensure that Alabamians have access to adequate healthcare without forfeiting the conservative values that guide our Republican Party.”
Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard, R – Auburn, said committee assignments were made based upon the experience and expertise that each member of the House possesses.
“Rep. Mooney is a successful businessman and commercial realtor with decades of experience, that makes him perfectly suited to the General Fund budget committee,” Hubbard wrote. “I know that the citizens of our state will benefit greatly from his service in the Alabama House.”
Mooney was elected to the Alabama House in 2014 and recently participated in the constitutionally-mandated organizational session of the Legislature.
The 2015 regular session is scheduled to convene on March 3 and is expected to adjourn sometime around mid-June.
