In 2012, Spain Park football had a successful playoff run, reaching the AHSAA Class 6A state quarterfinals with Chip Lindsey wearing a headset and Nick Mullens under center. Now that Lindsey has joined the coaching staff at Auburn and Mullens is preparing for his freshman season at Southern Mississippi, it is up to former Hoover defensive coordinator Shawn Raney to lead the 2013 Jags toward continuing the legacy set forward by his predecessor.
Last year, Spain Park finished with an 8-2 regular season mark; the Jaguars fell to Carver-Montgomery after opening the state playoffs with two double-digit wins. Mullens led the Jaguars to their first ever region title, racking up 3,649 yards and 40 touchdowns in his senior campaign.
When all was said and done with Mullens’ high school career, he had thrown for the seventh-most career yards in AHSAA history. It’s now up to Raney to find the young man who will fill Mullens’ shoes at Spain Park.
“We lost some key components from last year, most importantly Nick Mullens,” Raney said. “No one else has taken a snap for three years.”
