The Kingwood Christian Lions extended their winning streak to three games as they defeated the visiting Cornerstone Christian Chargers 36-24, on Oct. 3.

The Lions got off to a fast start as they found the end zone on the second play from scrimmage. The score came on a 41-yard run by junior running back Charles White. After a successful two-point conversion, Kingwood led 8-0.

The Chargers got on the board first with 9:36 left in the half, on a long touchdown catch by Wesley Brown. Following the 40-yard scoring play, Cornerstone kicked an extra point, pulling within one point of KCS.

Cornerstone added a field goal right before the half, making the score 10-8 going into the break.

Nearing the end of the third quarter the Lions were able to regain the lead on a one-yard quarterback dive by Yatil Gant. Following the two-point conversion, Kingwood led 16-10 with three minutes left in the third quarter.

The beginning of the fourth quarter was sloppy for both teams. Kingwood coughed up the ball and the Chargers recovered it at the beginning of the quarter. Cornerstone followed up the turnover with one of its own as the Chargers threw an interception deep in Kingwood territory.

With seven minutes left in the game the Lions scored on a 92-yard run by E.J. Gant, giving them a 14-point lead. However, the Chargers were not done, as they scored on a 31-yard rush by Quartez Walker, drawing within a touchdown.

Following the Cornerstone score, Kingwood put a stop to their comeback. Gant scored on another long run, making the score 30-17 with 6:26 left in the game.

Both teams added a touchdown a piece at the end of the fourth quarter. Kingwood’s came on a 5-yard run by White and Cornerstone’s came on a 21-yard run by Brown.

Kingwood head coach Steve Birmingham said he was glad his team won but feels they have a lot of work to do.

“We feel fortunate to get the win but we’ve got to try hard every week to minimize these mistakes,” he said. “We need to do a better job of that next week.”

Kingwood will travel to play Restoration Academy Oct. 10. Cornerstone will also travel to play Lyman Ward that night.
