PELHAM—Pelham High School advanced art students are getting ready for the annual department field trip to Atlanta’s High Museum of Art.

On Nov. 9, the students will take a day trip to view four exhibits from different disciplines. They will view American Encounters, an exhibit featuring American Revolution-era portraits, Cézanne and the Modern, a collection of modern art from the likes of Manet, Degas and Van Gogh, Make a Joyful Noise, a selection of sculpture and pieces from the Florence Cathedral, and Gordon Parks: Segregation Story, a showcase of photographs from the 1950s taken for Life magazine documenting segregation.

“Part of (the trip) is a tour and for part of it (the students) can go to the areas they’re interested in,” Harrison said. “It usually depends on… which (discipline) they like best.”

After seeing the four main exhibits, students will be allowed to tour the museum on their own and visit galleries that interest them. Harrison said students often enjoy the High Museum of Art’s permanent collection, which includes everything from folk art to pieces by Andy Warhol.

“I’ve probably been taking groups for 15 or 20 years now,” PHS art teacher Kim Harrison said, explaining the trip exposes the advanced art students to famous artists, new techniques and inspiration.

“I just think it’s really good for students to be exposed to artwork in a museum… I like for them to see different artists’ painting styles,” Harrison said of her advanced painting students. “A lot of times (the students) will do something in an artist’s style or try something new.”
