COLUMBIANA—A reception was held July 24 to honor Steve Martin, who recently resigned after 26 years of service on the Shelby County Board of Education.

Martin and his wife, Linda Martin, are embarking on a three-week trip before retiring to their home in Gulf Shores, Martin said.

“I’m writing the next chapter of my life and I’m not going to write real fast,” Martin joked of his retirement.

However, Martin has already gotten involved in the community, volunteering as an ambassador for the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m going to keep active doing civic work,” Martin said.

Previous superintendents Ellie Glasscox and Norma Rogers were among those who came back to honor Martin during the July 24 reception. Others who came back to honor Martin were his long-time fellow board member, Dr. Lee Doebler, and former Chief Financial Officer, Jim Davis.

“We appreciate your insight over the years and what you’ve done to lead this system to be the best it has ever been,” Superintendent Randy Fuller said during the reception.

Shelby County Board of Education President Aubrey Miller said there are approximately six applicants so far to fill Martin’s position, and the board will look to fill the position within the next two weeks.

“We must have someone chosen by the next board meeting,” Miller said.
