The new associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church is, as always, a familiar face to the Alabaster congregation.

In the past 30 years, Rev. Earl Goodwin has been a member of the church, a choir member, Youth Group assistant, Sunday School teacher, camp and youth representative, Contemporary Worship leader and Transitional Worship Leader. Goodwin has attended numerous sessions of C.P.Y.C., Triennium and General Assembly.

Although not married, he is an uncle and great uncle several times over. Brother Jim (age 63) and Goodwin are the only siblings. Their father, Calvin, is deceased so Mom Clarice is the matriarch of the family.
“Taking care of my Mom has really shown me how important love and compassion are to a shut-in,” he said.

In his new position, Goodwin will assume responsibilities that will help to lighten the load on Pastor Darren Kennemer. Visiting hospital patients and shut-ins, leading some worship services, assisting with Holy Communion and family fellowship and numerous other activities will keep Goodwin busy.

“At FPC, I want to help things get better. How to do that, I’m not sure yet but I know from where we came and I know all kinds of possibilities are out there. We’ve just got to find them,” he said.

A graduate of Banks High School, University of Montevallo and Memphis Theological Seminary and ordained in 1988, Goodwin has a varied career. An accomplished musician, elementary teacher, wedding coordinator, florist, caterer, hospital chaplain (his favorite) and pastor along with several other jobs give Goodwin “one up” on a variety of talents and thoughts.

Noting the best trip he ever took was to Japan for General Assembly, Goodwin was very impressed with the friendliness of the Japanese people.
“The people there rival good old Southern Hospitality with their warmth and welcome,” said Goodwin.

Happiest when spending time with people he loves, Goodwin is known for his “bear hugs”, big smile, relaxed style and compassion for all people.
