And then there were two.
Arnold Mooney and Amie Beth Shaver will face each other in a runoff election for Alabama State House of Representatives District 43 after the duo received 30.12 percent and 22.51 percent of the votes with all but the provisional ballots counted.
The race saw the runoff candidates take on Doug Clark, John Bahakel, Cheryl Ciamarra, Gina H. McDonald and Don Murphy.
As of 10:27 p.m. on June 3, Mooney led the way with 2,318 votes and said he was proud to have the opportunity to continue.
“It’s a tremendous process,” he said. “The other six are tremendous folks. (I’m) thankful to have gotten the votes. We’re very excited.”
In Shelby County, Shaver received 1,732 votes, putting her in second, while Clark gathered 1,496 total votes, Ciamarra gathered 11.47 percent of the votes, former Pelham mayor Murphy gathered 6.94 percent, Bahakel came in with 6.76 percent of the total votes cast and McDonald received 2.77 percent of the vote. House District 43 also covers a small percentage of Jefferson County. Jefferson County numbers are not included in these totals.
Calls placed to the other six candidates were not returned as of 10:37 p.m. June 3. The runoff will take place July 15, and the winner will take the seat vacated by Mary Sue McClurkin, as there is no opposition from the Democratic Party for the position.
