Fresh off an appearance in the AHSAA Class 6A state soccer finals, Oak Mountain head coach Dan DeMasters is already looking toward the future, albeit a little bit farther into the future than next season.
DeMasters is hosting the Dynamic Development soccer camp June 23-27 at the Oak Mountain High School field, and hopes to provide the chance to learn skills while having a good time.
I’ve worked a lot of youth camps,” DeMasters said. “I thought it would be cool. The main thing is developing kids and mak(ing) them enjoy soccer. (At) ages 5-12, you want them (to have) fun.”
DeMasters said the camp will teach aspects of the game in the mornings, and in the afternoons will allow campers to play games. He also said there will be themes during the week such as Uniform Day and Wacky Wednesday to allow campers to have fun while learning.
DeMasters said that for older players will have a higher curriculum that focuses on preparing for the next level.
“We want to emphasize the practice habits and (get kids) more and more touches (on the ball),” he said. “They can expect training, but a lot of game and events.”
In addition to the games an events, there will be awards for soccer-related events as well as for events such as a talent show.
The cost of the camp is $275 for the higher curriculum players and $250 for younger players, but DeMasters said there were “tons of discounts” found online. Those who register before June 9 will receive $30 off, and small group discounts are available. A $50 deposit is required upon registration.
“I think we’re doing something different,” he said. “I know kids will enjoy it.”
DeMasters said the camp is open to any players in Shelby County. It will run each day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and will feature a parents’ night on Thursday, June 26.
