Music on Main will bring art to Main Street in Columbiana on Friday May 23 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The Lefty Collins Band will play as Shelby County Arts Council artists/ teachers, Jerry Roldan and Edna Sealy, will bring their artistic talents to Main Street.

Roldan will paint a painting of the Shelby County Old Courthouse as the band plays; the finished work a SCAC fundraiser. Sealy, who is known for her children’s SCAC summer camps and art abilities classes for special needs, will paint with children. She also recently won Ms. Senior Heart of Dixie.

Roldan, named by USA Today, Time and Life magazines as one of 100 up-and-coming regional artists, will paint the courthouse at the porch of the Columbiana Eye Clinic, office of Dr. Johnna Blackerby and Dr. Stancil Handley. Educated with a BFA and master’s in art from the University of Alabama, he taught at the college level in Mobile and then became the city of Mobile’s art specialist for 25 years. He retired from the education department of the Mobile Museum of Art and as co-manager of the Art Instructional Center in Mobile in 2011. Friends drew him to Shelby County and he fell in love with Lay Lake and fellow artist Edna Sealy.

Through his contact with Sealy, he began teaching at SCAC.

“I am very impressed with Edna and Terri (Sullivan, SCAC founder),” said Roldan. “I caught their vision. Their main objective is that it’s all about the kids, to make them have a good experience.”

The courthouse painting will be a fundraiser for the SCAC with 50 percent of proceeds to SCAC and 50 percent to Roldan. Roldan is known for his regional painting of buildings. If successful, Roldan plans to go down Main Street and paint the community. Next building would possibly be Bernie’s on Main.

Other children’s activities planned for May 23 are Balloon Man, sidewalk chalk art, hula hoops and bouncy house.
