COLUMBIANA — Shelby County officials anticipate the state will start resurfacing work in June on Cahaba Valley Trace and Caldwell Mill Road off Alabama 119, and Shelby County 10 from the Bibb County line to Shelby County 22 in the Pea Ridge area.

The Shelby County Commission in April approved two financing agreements for the resurfacing work via the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP). ATRIP is a state Department of Transportation-administered federal aid highway program that funds up to 80 percent of the construction of roadway projects. Local sponsors of eligible projects are expected to provide at least 20 percent of the project construction cost.

Dunn Construction was the low bidder at $1.06 million to resurface Caldwell Mill Road (Shelby County 29) from Alabama 119 to Valleydale Road, and from Cahaba Valley Trace (Shelby County 14) between Caldwell Mill Road and Alabama 119.

Wiregrass Construction was the low bidder at $1.128 million to resurface Shelby County 10 from the Bibb County line to Shelby County 22 in the Pea Ridge area.

During the commission’s May 12 regular meeting, Shelby County Manager Alex Dudchock said the goal is to complete most of the resurfacing work before school returns in August. Shelby County Engineer Randy Cole added that resurfacing work on Valleydale Road will likely be done at night to minimize traffic congestion, citing 20,000 cars travel Valleydale Road daily.

Also, at the recommendation of Dudchock and Cole, the commission unanimously voted to enter into standard contracts with the Alabama Department of Transportation for bridge replacement and approaches over Muddy Prong Creek on Shelby County 55 from Weatherton Drive to approximately 1,150 feet south of U.S. 280, as well as resurfacing work on Valleydale Road from Caldwell Mill Road to U.S. 280.

County officials also expect work to begin this summer on the $4.27 million bid award for street paving that includes several projects funded by the cities of Pelham and Montevallo. Wiregrass Construction was the low bidder.
