To say the Vincent Yellow Jackets captured the AHSAA Class 2A, Area 10 tournament title is an understatement.
The Jackets didn’t just defeat the competition, they absolutely dominated it, taking the tournament in three games. In the three games, Vincent outscored opponents 50-11.
In the opener, the game never made it past the third inning as Vincent took down Holy Family 20-4. A 15-run bottom of the first got the Jackets on the board, and the defense took over from there. Vincent allowed two runs in the top of the second, but a five-run bottom of the inning gave the Jackets a 20-2 lead.
Holy Family was able to put two runs across in the third, but the Yellow Jacket offense shut down any kind of rally, clinching the 20-4 win.
Courtney Barber pitched all three innings, three earned runs on no hits, walking nine and striking out six. At the plate, Quenessa Crawford went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Ambran Middleton went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs.
A 15-2 win over Fultondale followed, which saw the Yellow Jackets once again use a big inning to seal the win. Up 6-2 in the top of the ninth, Vincent exploded for nine runs to take a 15-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the VHS defense stood strong again, ensuring the win.
Makaila Odom led the way pitching for Vincent, surrendering no earned runs on one hit, walking three and striking out nine. At the plate, Barber had a huge day, going 2-for-4 with a run and five RBIs. Jameia White went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
In the final game of the tournament the Jackets once again faced Fultondale, and once again posted 15 runs in a 15-5 win. Vincent again opened with a big inning, posting five runs to start the game. Despite a late push by the Wildcats, Vincent hung on for the 15-5 win and the area championship.
Odom paced the Jackets pitching, giving up no earned runs on two hits, walking five and striking out five.
Vincent now moves to the regional tournament, with its opponent yet to be announced.
