CALERA—Derek Edward Kiley was arrested April 22 and charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of domestic violence in the third degree.
According to Calera police chief Sean Lemley, officers arrived in the Savannah Point subdivision at approximately 11:30 p.m. after responding to reports that the suspect was “shooting inside the residence” containing his spouse and children.
Upon the officers’ arrival, Kiley allegedly exited the residence and “fired a round at the officers,” Lemley said.
The suspect surrendered shortly after, and there were no injuries to police officers.
No information on the suspect’s spouse or children could be divulged at this time, Lemley said.
Attempted murder is a Class A felony, and domestic violence in the third degree is a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, Kiley could face between 10 years and 99 years in prison for the charge of attempted murder, and not more than one year for the charge of domestic violence in the third degree.
