COLUMBIANA— Shelby County High School interim coach Heath Childers has been promoted to permanent head football coach, SCHS principal Gene Rogers said.

“We just think the world of him,” Rogers said. “He’s well-respected within the coaching ranks. I know for a fact he will work tirelessly. ”

Rogers replaces former head coach Brent Smith, who was relieved of his duties in March after the program chose to head in a different direction following back-to-back 2-18 seasons.

Childers, who had not returned a call for comment as of 12:30 p.m. on April 18, impressed the selection committee with his work ethic, Roger said.

“He’s the kind of guy who will work harder than anyone else,” Rogers said. “He expects his team to work harder.”

Rogers also said Childers’ success on previous staffs at Shelby County was a factor in the decision as well.

“He was an instrumental part of what I believe was one of the most successful (times) in Shelby County football,” Rogers said. “The kids are excited.”

Rogers also said that John Watkins had been named athletic director, having previously served as assistant athletic director at SCHS.

“I think he’ll be a great fit,” Rogers said. “He cares a great deal about the success of (all) our programs.”
