HOOVER – Members of the Hannah Home Shelby Auxiliary group hosted a Christmas party for Hannah Home residents Dec. 12, one of the many ways the auxiliary group has continued to support the home’s residents since it formed in 2005.

Hannah Home of Shelby County, a division of King’s Home, has provided Christian-centered, safe living environments for homeless and abused women and children since it was built in 2007. The auxiliary group raised the funds to build the home and continues to support the facility both financially and in other ways, said former president and current member Amy Reese.

Reese said the auxiliary has about 50 members and supports residents through monthly parties, a one-on-one encouragers program, fundraisers, and programs providing activities such as exercise, sewing and devotionals.

“We try to do whatever we can to help support them,” Reese said.

According to the website, Hannah Homes are “not short-term shelters; they are long-term solutions.”

Women seeking refuge from abuse and domestic violence may stay up to two years at the facility and “take the necessary time to truly heal themselves and their families,” according to the website.

Residents undergo counseling, receive job training, earn their GEDs and focus on their educations during their time at the facility. Their stay culminates in residents’ relocation to one of four traditional apartments on the campus, where they experience independence and self-reliance before their leaving the facility.
