HOOVER — Hoover City Schools has named a Spain Park High School teacher as one of its 2013-2014 Teachers of the Year.

Craig Thompson, a ninth and tenth grade social studies teacher at Spain Park and a 13-year teaching veteran, is the system’s Secondary Teacher of the Year. Ellen Anson, a 39-year teaching veteran at Rocky Ridge Elementary School, is the system’s Elementary Teacher of the Year. Anson and Thompson were surprised with the news during ceremonies at their respective schools Dec. 16.

Teachers of the Year are selected through faculty, staff and administration recommendations and nominations.

“Being selected by your peers for excellence is an incredible honor,” Superintendent Andy Craig said in a news release. “We are fortunate to have high-quality teachers throughout our school system.”

Thompson and Anson will be put forward as State Board of Education District IV candidates for the Alabama Teacher of the Year program, administered by the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education.

Other Hoover Teachers of the Year in Shelby County include:

• Emily Causey, fourth grade, Riverchase Elementary
• Maya Britt, eighth grade, Berry Middle
