CALERA – A Calera man charged with sexual abuse in two different cases pleaded not guilty to a first degree sexual abuse charge Sept. 19.

Fred Wayne Horton, 75, of Calera was arrested for first degree sexual abuse Aug. 16 in a case involving a minor, according to Assistant District Attorney for Shelby County Allison Boyd. Shelby County Jail records show Horton was released on a $30,000 bond.

Two weeks later, a second warrant was issued for Horton’s arrest for second degree sexual abuse. Horton was arrested on Sept. 5 and released on a $3,000 bond, according to jail records.

Horton was set to appear before Judge Dan Reeves Oct. 2 for the first charge but never appeared in court because his attorneys filed a waiver of arraignment Sept. 19, according to court documents. Horton has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 2 at 8:30 a.m.

Regarding the second charge, Horton was scheduled to appear before Judge Ronald Jackson Oct. 7 at 8:30 a.m., but the case has been continued, according to court documents. Horton’s next court appearance is set for Nov. 16 at 9 a.m.
