FROM STAFF REPORTS

Citizens can dispose of unused, expired or unwanted prescriptions Oct. 26 at one of six locations throughout the county as part of National Prescription Take Back Day. The free drop-off is anonymous and helps fight prescription drug abuse, according to a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Medications that stay in home cabinets are easily stolen and abused, according to the press release. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration website, Shelby County citizens turned in 429.5 pounds of unwanted medications at five locations April 27.

Prescriptions can be dropped off at the following locations between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Oct. 26:

-Alabaster Target, 250 South Colonial Drive, Alabaster.

-CVS, 520 Alabama 119, Alabaster.

-Greystone YMCA, 5414 U.S. 280, Birmingham.

-Pelham Police Department, 32 Philip Davis Street, Pelham

-University of Montevallo on Main, 737 Main Street, Montevallo.

-Winn-Dixie, 2653 Valleydale Road, Birmingham.

The event is sponsored by the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
