In a game that featured as many punts as points, Spain Park earned its third win of the season with a 14-0 decision over Chelsea.

Two first-quarter touchdowns were all the Jaguars needed to reach 3-0, despite their offense being outgained 191-173.

“We learned a lesson with a win,” Raney said. “That’s always a fortunate situation because usually you get a game like that and you don’t win.”

The Jaguars got on the board on their first drive. Senior quarterback Mickey Forrest completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Kourtney Moore 3:56 into the game, capping an 80 yard drive.

“Kourtney had a perfect post route,” Forrest said. “There was only one place I could put it and it was a great catch.

“We knew we had a job to do; we had a great game plan against the defense they were running and we were fortunate enough to get it in the end zone.”

After the Hornets turned the ball over on downs, Forrest responded with his legs. He called his own number for a two-yard scamper on the left side for what proved to be the final score of the game with 3:57 to play in the first.

After the first quarter, Spain Park’s offense was largely ineffective, recording just four first downs over the next 40 minutes of play.

Forrest finished 10-for-27 passing with 120 yards and the touchdown to Moore.

“Their defense played really well,” Jaguar head coach Shawn Raney said. “We couldn’t block them on the perimeter or inside.”

The Jaguar defense took over, holding Chelsea to no points. Sophomore linebacker Perry Young led the way for Spain Park, recording nine tackles and nearly intercepting a Hornet pass in the fourth quarter.

“At the rate the offense was going, I felt I had to help them out,” Young said. “We kept the shutout. I just wanted to help my team out; I love these guys.”

Forrest’s counterpart, Chelsea senior Trenton Hagin, finished 7/15 for 35 yards. Led by sophomore AJ Jones’ 90 yards, the Hornets gained 156 total rushing yards in the loss.

The game featured two head coaches in their first season with their respective teams; Raney moves on with a 3-0 start to his coaching career, while Chris Elmore fell into a 1-2 hole with the Chelsea loss.

“I respect Chris a lot,” Raney said.  “Watching the way his kids played, I thought they played very gutty tonight and I was really impressed.”

Next up for the Jags (2-0 Class 6A Region 4) is a trip to regional foe Wetumpka, while Chelsea (0-2 6A-4) will play its second straight road game against Stanhope Elmore.
