The American Cancer Society kicked off its Cancer Prevention Study-3 enrollment recruitment this week.

Partner host sites held internal kickoff events and educational trainings to inform employees, supporters, members and the community at large about CPS-3 and encourage enrollment, according to an ACS press release. The second Birmingham enrollment for CPS-3 will take place Oct.1 1-3 in partnership with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, the City of Gardendale and St. Vincent’s One Nineteen in Shelby County.

“We are thrilled with the response we have received from the community this year and the amazing support from our host sites,” said Lori Blanton, senior director with the American Cancer Society. “Last year we enrolled over 1,300 individuals from the Birmingham area in CPS-3. We hope to exceed that number this year to help make this study a success. I think it is important to know that CPS-3 will give researchers the opportunity to study and learn more about cancer prevention and help save future generations from this deadly disease.”

The goal of CPS-3 is to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. The American Cancer Society’s Department of Epidemiology & Surveillance Research is recruiting 300,000 men and women, ages 30-65 across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, who have not had a previous diagnosis of cancer to participate in this study.
