PELHAM — While most high school football teams host jamborees that involve bringing in outside opponents to test their ability before the season starts, Pelham High School has a unique tradition.
The annual Green and Gold Game features all of the schools within the city of Pelham squaring off their first-string squads against each other in intersquad matchups. It will feature Helena Middle, Riverchase Middle, the Pelham High freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams each taking the field.
Event promoter Ricky Granger said it was a chance for everyone in the community to come out and take pride in the city.
“Basically, it’s a showcase for the community,” he said.
The teams will each take Bobby Hayes Field at Ned Bearden Stadium, which will be a new experience for younger players and a last chance to tune up before the season for the varsity squad.
“We’ve been doing this for years,” Granger said. “It’s mainly an opportunity to scrimmage and get the middle schools to experience the game day atmosphere.”
While the event has a special atmosphere including providing food, Granger said it is more about the community than anything else.
The event will begin at 5 p.m., and cost $3 to get in. For more information, contact Granger at 613-4751.
