CALERA – During its June 17 meeting, the City Council rescinded a proposed streetlight for Highway 304. Public Works Director David Jones previously recommended the streetlight with the oversight of an existing streetlight across the road. Jones stated there is not a need for a light on each side of the intersection.
Park and Recreation Director Seth Gandy said Saturday, April 26, 2014 is the date for the next Strawberry Festival. Gandy asked the council to consider the Calera Farmers Market a special event day in order to attract more vendor participation. Vendors have been required to purchase a business license and pay booth rental. Gandy explained most vendors participate for fun, and their overhead is excessive. The council voted to re-classify the market as a special event in order to waive costs for a business license.
In other business, the council heard:
• A budget adjustment request from Finance Director Roy Hadaway concerning a police car that received hail damage from a storm.
• A recommendation for the Historic Presbyterian Church bell from Mike Wood. A location within the county will be sought to place the bell indoors for display in order to preserve it.
• A new air conditioner was installed in the police department for $6400 by Active Air.
• And adopted Resolution No. 2013-08, a request to close an alley from Larry Hughes.
