HOOVER — The Shelby Women’s League is hosting a membership social to bring in new prospective members while also collecting items to donate to Sav-a-Life.

Women’s League organizer Susie Kelley said the membership event, to be held at Hilton Homewood Suites in Riverchase on April 17, will double as a Sav-a-Life baby shower. The event will be from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and will feature a breakfast buffet. Cost is $7 at the door, and attendees are asked to bring unwrapped baby items.

Kelley said she’s hoping to see between 25-35 attendees at the event.

The Shelby Women’s League is an opportunity for local businesswomen to meet each other and support Shelby County, Kelley said.

“It’s for women to network and help each other in business, as well as giving back to the community and Shelby County to make it better,” she said.

The organization costs nothing to join, but at every meeting, $5 donations are taken up from members, whose names are then put into a drawing. Whoever wins the drawing is able to choose a charity to which the money will be donated, Kelley said.

Meetings are on the fourth Friday of each month from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Hilton Homewood Suites. Lunch is available.

Fellow league organizer Jennifer Whisenant said the organization has 22 members, and will follow up the April 17 event with an event at the Community of Hope Health Clinic in Pelham at 5 p.m. on May 9.

There, Women’s League members will provide dinner for volunteers and goody bags for any children there.

Kelley said the league tries to do a Shelby County service project at least once a quarter, but typically service events happen more often.

She said she hopes to see the league continue to grow.

“I would love to see it grow in the number of members, and I feel like the more members we have, the more opportunities for networking and also for service projects for the county,” Kelley said.
