MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo men’s and women’s basketball teams host Young Harris College in their final regular season home game Saturday, March 2 at Trustmark Arena on Senior Day.
A limited supply of Montevallo basketball t-shirts will be given away at the door. The Calera High School Pep Band will be back to perform for the second consecutive home game.
Tip off for the women’s game is set for 1:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game.
The Montevallo men’s team will celebrate its six seniors, including Travis DeShazior, Danny Cummins, Jonas Brown, Marvin Fitzgerald, Drico Hightower and Jeff Hefner.
The Montevallo women’s team will celebrate the careers of its four seniors, including Trena Moore-Smith, Zena Nasiloski, Alex Strickland and Carolyn Taite.
Both teams enter the final regular season game with a lot riding on the outcome.
The Montevallo men’s team can capture the Peach Belt Conference West Division regular season championship outright with a win over the Mountain Lions, who defeated the Falcons 92-84 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.
Montevallo (17-8 overall, 13-5 in Peach Belt Conference) has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the West Division in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament due to Young Harris being ineligible to participate in its first year of conference membership.
The Montevallo women’s team can clinch the most regular season wins since becoming a full-fledged NCAA Division II member prior to the 1996-1997 season with a victory in its final home game.
The Falcons (16-11 overall, 11-7 in Peach Belt Conference) tied the mark with a 50-43 win on the road at Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference game Feb. 23. One more victory would help the 2012-2013 team surpass the previous NCAA Division II mark of 16 wins achieved by the 2004-2005 squad.
